About Kiama’s famous blowhole

Kiama is famous for its blowhole, a natural rock formation that spouts seawater 20 metres or more into the air. Spectators are drenched if they get too close to the Kiama Blowhole, a 90-minute drive south of Sydney along the Grand Pacific Drive, a spectacular touring route.

You can also travel by train from Sydney’s Central Station to Kiama, located next to verdant rolling hills and gorgeous sandy beaches. The train journey along the coast is about two hours and passes through Wollongong, NSW’s third-largest city.

Next to the Kiama Lighthouse, the blowhole’s tremendous display is fuelled by powerful southeast ocean swells. If the water spout is placid, drive ten minutes’ south to the Little Blowhole, which relies on the prevailing northeast seas.

A great way to explore the area and enjoy the magnificent natural attractions is along the Kiama Coast Walk, a 22 km trail that can take you from Minnamurra to Gerringong. Follow the walk at your own pace, exploring the secluded beaches and bays. You’ll be delighted with the breathtaking ocean views.

Accommodation options in the Kiama area to suit travellers with a range of tastes and budgets. Farther south, Gerringong is a quintessential Australian beach town, situated on a headland with a splendid panorama of the ocean and Werri Beach.

Nearby learn surfing at Surf Camp Australia in Gerroa, a small coastal town known for its beautiful beach and Seven Mile Beach National Park. Inland is Jamberoo, a pretty village. Enjoy lunch at the pub, visit nearby Minnamurra Rainforest, the Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures or Jamberoo Action Park for giant waterslides.
